Technology has expanded the ways chiropractors can deliver an adjustment. At Restorative Chiropractic & Dry Needling, we primarily use the Impulse iQ® Adjusting Instrument to provide gentle, controlled and targeted computer-aided chiropractic adjustments.
The Impulse iQ is an FDA-cleared chiropractic adjusting instrument. Its development is supported by years of published biomechanical research examining instrument-delivered chiropractic adjustments, including the forces produced by adjusting instruments, resulting vertebral motion, and neuromuscular responses.
This doesn't mean that instrument adjusting is better for every patient or that manual chiropractic adjusting is ineffective. It means that computer-aided adjusting isn't simply an experimental alternative to traditional chiropractic—it is an established approach supported by published research and purpose-built technology.
Controlled Force
Impulse iQ® uses microcomputer-controlled technology to deliver rapid, controlled mechanical thrusts. The instrument provides three selectable force settings, allowing the chiropractor to select an appropriate level for the area being treated and the individual patient.
An internal sensor measures the mechanical response during treatment and provides feedback to the instrument's microcomputer.
The technology delivers the adjustment—but it does not replace the chiropractor's clinical judgment.
Dr. Schueller determines whether an adjustment is appropriate, where treatment should be directed, the appropriate contact and line of drive, and how the patient responds based on examination findings, anatomy and clinical experience.
Sensor-Based Technology
Impulse iQ® incorporates an internal accelerometer and computerized feedback system that monitors the mechanical response during treatment. This technology helps control how the instrument delivers its repeated mechanical impulses.
Rather than relying solely on the doctor's hands to generate the adjusting thrust, Impulse iQ provides a controlled and repeatable mechanical input while the chiropractor remains responsible for evaluating and directing the treatment.

Developed Through Years of Research
Impulse technology has been investigated through published peer-reviewed research in journals including the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics, Spine, Clinical Biomechanics, European Spine Journal, and the Journal of Biomechanics.
Researchers have studied topics including:
force characteristics of mechanical adjusting instruments;
three-dimensional vertebral motion produced by instrument-delivered thrusts;
spinal mechanical responses to different force levels and thrust durations;
neuromuscular responses associated with mechanically assisted spinal manipulation; and
the biomechanical effects of repeated mechanical thrusts.
This research helps explain how mechanically delivered chiropractic adjustments interact with the spine and surrounding neuromuscular system. It should not be interpreted to mean that Impulse iQ has been proven superior to every form of manual chiropractic treatment.
Controlled, Rapid, and Comfortable
Impulse iQ® offers three different force settings and delivers its mechanical thrust very rapidly. Because the adjustment does not require the twisting commonly associated with manual manipulation, many patients describe treatment as a gentle tapping sensation.
The goal is not simply to use technology. The goal is to combine clinical judgment with controlled technology to deliver the adjustment Dr. Schueller believes is appropriate for the individual patient.

In the early years of my practice, I achieved very good results using manual chiropractic adjustments. After discovering the Impulse adjusting instrument and examining the technology and research behind mechanically assisted adjusting, I gradually transitioned toward instrument adjusting as my primary method.
I continue to use manual adjusting when I believe it is appropriate. However, Impulse iQ gives me a controlled, targeted and gentle way to deliver most of the chiropractic adjustments I perform.
Here are several differences I've observed in my own practice:
Comfort: Patients commonly describe the adjustment as a gentle tapping sensation. This can be particularly appealing to people who are uncomfortable with twisting or "cracking" adjustments.
Precision: The instrument allows me to direct the adjusting force toward the specific area and direction I have identified during my examination rather than relying on a broader manual thrust.
Clinical flexibility: Because the instrument provides selectable force settings and controlled mechanical thrusts, I can modify how I deliver an adjustment according to the patient, the area being treated and my examination findings.
Efficiency: In my own clinical experience, I've found that many patients respond well without requiring high-frequency treatment schedules. This is my observation from practice rather than a claim that research has proven Impulse iQ requires fewer visits.
The instrument itself does not decide where a patient should be adjusted or whether an adjustment is appropriate. That's my job as the chiropractor.
My clinical experience, examination findings and knowledge of anatomy guide the treatment. Impulse iQ is the technology I use to deliver the adjustment in a controlled and reproducible manner.
Research and Regulatory Information
The Impulse iQ Adjusting Instrument is FDA-cleared for chiropractic adjustment, mobilization, or manipulation of musculoskeletal joints of the spine and extremities, as well as soft-tissue musculoskeletal mobilization by a licensed healthcare professional.
Impulse and mechanically assisted spinal manipulation have also been studied in peer-reviewed biomechanical research examining instrument force characteristics, vertebral motion, and neuromuscular responses.

FDA 510(k): K080261 — Impulse iQ Adjusting Instrument.
FDA clearance means that the FDA determined the device met the applicable requirements for marketing through the 510(k) process. It should not be interpreted as FDA endorsement of Impulse iQ over other chiropractic adjusting methods or as proof of superior clinical outcomes.
